フィリピンと言えば首都はマニラであり、日本で言う東京のように考えている人が多いと思います。私もフィリピンに駐在するまではそう思っていました。日本人が思い浮かべるマニラというのは下の図のように、16市１町からなるマニラ首都圏を指します。マニラ市もあるから少し混乱します。日本人の駐在員でマニラ市に住んでいる人は海運関係の方など多少居ますが、それほど多くはありません。大半はMakati市かTaguig市に住んでいます。マニラ首都圏では13百万人程度の人口がありますが、これは、16市１町の合計です。

When it comes to the Philippines, the capital is Manila, and I think many people think of it like Tokyo in Japan. That’s what I used to think until I came to the Philippines. When Japanese people think of Manila, it refers to the Metro Manila, which consists of 16 cities and 1 town, as shown in the map below. It’s a little confusing because there is also Manila City. There are some Japanese expatriates living in Manila, such as those in the shipping industry, but not that many. Most live in Makati City or Taguig City. The population of Metro Manila is about 13 million, which is the total of 16 cities and 1 town.

さて、今回はマニラ首都圏・Pasay市にある、Dampa Seaside Marketを紹介します。ここでは、市場で魚介類を自分で買い、それを市場内のレストランに持ち込み好きな調理法で料理してもらう形式です。自分で釣った魚を調理してもらうようなイベント性があり、とても楽しいです。市場での強烈な呼び込み、０．５キロが最小単位だったりすることを除けば、大変楽しいです。写真は市場の様子です。かなりのお店があり、正直どこで買うのが良いのか、私には分かりません。

Now, I would like to introduce you to Dampa Seaside Market in Pasay City, Metro Manila. Here, you can buy your own seafood at the market and bring it to the restaurant in the market to have it cooked in the way you like. It is a very fun and eventful way to have your own fish cooked for you. Except for the intense hawking at the market and the 0.5 kg is the minimum unit, it is very enjoyable. The photo is a shot of the market. There are quite a lot stores and I honestly don’t know where to buy seafoods.

調理は煮たり、焼いたり、蒸したり、スープにしたりと色々な選択肢があります。普通に海鮮レストランに行くのとは何か一味違う楽しさがあると思います。楽しいのですが、最小でも５００グラムから買うことがほとんどなので大人数で行く方が楽しいのかな、と思います。何度行っても楽しい場所なのでお薦めです。

There are many options for cooking, such as boiling, grilling, steaming, and making soup. It’s something different and more fun than going to a regular seafood restaurant. It’s fun, but I think it’s more fun to go with a large group because most of the time the minimum purchase is 500 grams. It’s a fun place to go again and again, so I recommend it.
