卒業旅行（４）から時間が経ってしまった。ウィーンからベネチアに夜行列車で行き、フィレンツェからローマへ。ローマからもう一度ウィーンに行こう、と夜行列車でもう一度ウイーンへ、というところまで卒業旅行（４）で書いた。

It’s been a long time since my graduation trip (4). I took the night train from Vienna to Venice, then from Florence to Rome. I wrote about my graduation trip (4) in which I took the night train from Rome to Vienna again.

ウィーンは、落ち着いた街並みとその雰囲気をとても気に入った。それを再認識できた。お金もあまり持っていなかったはずだが、ウィーンで聞いたことの無いオーケストラによる「シェエラザード」を聞いた。曲が聴きどころ満載で、十分に満足した。

I really liked Vienna for its calm streets and its atmosphere. I was able to reaffirm that. I must not have had much money, but I heard “Schierazade” by an orchestra I had never heard the name of in Vienna. The piece was a joy to listen to and I was fully satisfied.

ウィーンからはハイデルベルグやケルンといったドイツの都市を観光した。どこに行っても高いところから街を眺めて満足する、そういう傾向がある。馬鹿と煙は高いところに登りたがる、ということわざ通り。

From Vienna, I went on a sightseeing tour of the German cities of Heidelberg and Cologne. No matter where I go, I tend to be satisfied with looking at the city from a high place.

ドイツでは、トイレにどうしても行きたくなった。公園にトイレがあったが、ＤとＨといった一文字が扉に書いてあるだけで、どちらが男でどちらが女か全くわからない。２，３分誰かが使うのを待ってみたが、そういう時に限って誰もトイレを使わない。ついに我慢できなくなって待ち切れず扉を思い切って開けたら、合っていた。運が良いと言えばそれまで。ガイドブックにそのことが書いてあったのか、今となっては分からない。現在のようにスマートフォンがあれば全く困らない話なんだが、なんせ約30年前。今となっては懐かしい。

In Germany, I really needed to go to the bathroom. There was a bathroom at the park, the problem was only written ”Ｄ” and “H” at the door. I didn’t know which was for men and for women. I waited for a couple of minutes for someone to use the toilet, but unfortunately no one used the toilet. Finally, I couldn’t wait any longer and opened the door to find that I was right. I was lucky, that’s all I can say. I don’t know now whether the guidebook mentioned it or not. If we had smart phones today, this would not be a problem at all, but it was about 30 years ago. Nowadays, I miss it.

旅の思い出の品をほとんど買っていない。ウィーンでスティッカーを買ったことは覚えている。古いスーツケースには未だにそのスティッカーが貼ってある。あれだけ色々な魅力的な都市を巡っているのに。あれだけそれぞれの都市に思い入れもあるのに、旅行時に買ったものはやはり特別で思い入れもある、と分かっているのに。それだけ貧乏な旅行だったということ。それはそれで仕方ないか。

I have bought very few souvenirs of my trip. I do remember that I bought a sticker in Vienna. I still have the sticker on my old suitcase. I have so many feelings for each city, and I know that the things I bought on my trip are special and have a special meaning to me. That’s how poor the trip was. I guess that’s just the way it is.

ドイツからベルギーに抜け、ベルギーのブリュッセル、ブルージュを巡り、フェリーでロンドンに戻った。ロンドンでは約束通り、K君とちゃんと待ち合わせを完了。ロンドンでは車窓から、ホッケーグラウンドがかなりあって感動した記憶がある。日本では陸上ホッケーは本当にマイナーなスポーツだから。K君とは一緒にバージンアトランティックに乗って旅行のことを話しながら東京に戻った。

From Germany, we passed through Belgium, visited Brussels and Bruges in Belgium, and took a ferry back to London. In London, as promised, Mr. K and I completed our rendezvous properly. In London, I remember being impressed by the sight of field hockey grounds from the car window. I took the Virgin Atlantic with Mr. K and we talked about our trip back to Tokyo.

卒業旅行についてはこれにて終了。
