怒涛の一日目が終わり、２日目。オリエンタル急行の終着駅はイスタンブールのSirkeci駅。２日目はそこからスタート。鉄道に乗ってYedikuleに向かった。コンスタンティノープルの陥落の現場を見るために要塞へ。海に近く、要塞も高さがあるため、眺めは良好。1453年の東ローマ帝国の滅亡に思いを馳せ要塞を後にする。

Day one is over and day two is upon us. The Oriental Express terminated at Sirkeci Station in Istanbul, where I started my second day. I took the train to Yedikule and went to the fortress to see the site of the fall of Constantinople. Thinking about the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1453, I left the fortress.

イスタンブール大学、スレイマニエ・モスクへ。モスクはすでに色々と見てきたのでそろそろ、「なるほど・・・」という感じになってしまった。丘の上にあるモスクで眺望がすばらしく、ガラタ塔などが見える。

Went to Istanbul University and Suleymaniye Mosque. I’ve already seen many mosques, so I’m starting to feel ”I see”. The mosque is located on a hill and has a wonderful view of the Galata Tower.

どういう訳だか、私の滞在中、有名なグランバザールは空いていなかった。ただ、小規模なエジプシャン・バザールでは、トルコの食文化の豊かさを実感できた。美味しそうなお菓子や香辛料が見た目良く並んでおり、職場の方へのお土産をバザールで買ったと記録にある。

For some reason, the famous Grand Bazaar was not open during my stay. However, in the smaller Egyptian Bazaar, I was able to experience the richness of Turkish food culture. Delicious-looking sweets and spices were lined up in a visually appealing manner, and I bought some souvenirs for my colleagues at work at the bazaar.

食堂のようなところで昼食を取り、その後はホテルで一休み。立地の良いホテルで疲れたらすぐ戻れたのは良かったです。Hotel Yasmak Sultanというホテルは今も経営しているよう。値段も高く無くお薦めできるホテル。

I had lunch at a cafeteria-like place, and then took a rest at the hotel. The Hotel Yasmak Sultan seems to be still in operation, the location is good, reasonable price, so I would like to recommend it for travelers.

午後はトプカプ宮殿を予定していたが、予定を変更し３日目に訪問することとした。これは私の調査不足によるもの。ドルマベフチェ宮殿に行き、ガイド付きの観光を終了。ガラタ橋のあるKarakoyには何度も行ったと思う。橋の下にあるパブのようなところでビール。トルコはイスラム教の国ですが、ビールが普通に飲めることが嬉しい。

I had planned to visit Topkapi Palace in the afternoon, but changed my plans to visit it on the third day. This was caused by my mistake. I went to Dolmabevce Palace and experienced a guided tour. Returned to Karakoy, where the Galata Bridge is located, many times. I had a beer at a pub-like place under the bridge. Turkey is a Muslim country, but I was glad to know that we can drink beer.

ホテルに一旦戻ってからハマム（トルコのお風呂）に向かう。なんとも中途半端な温度のお湯、旅行記によれば、「大男に好きなように扱われ終了」とある。兎に角イスタンブールでハマムを経験することが重要。食事をしてから、またもホテルでは熟睡。イスタンブールでは疲れ果てて熟睡、のパターン。

After returning to the hotel, I headed for the hamam (Turkish bath). The water was halfway hot, and according to the travelogue, I “ended up being treated as we wanted by a big man”. At any rate, it is important to experience a hamam in Istanbul. After eating dinner, I slept well in the hotel again. In Istanbul, I was exhausted and slept well.

またしても盛りだくさんな２日目が終了。
