ライト兄弟が「ライトフライヤ―号」の開発に成功したのは1903年。というからまだ100年強。そこから航空の指標であるRPK（revenue passenger kilometers）は戦争やテロ事件、世界的な不況などを乗り越えながら、順調に数値を伸ばしてきました。この指標は「旅客数」に「輸送距離」を乗じて算出した航空会社の旅客輸送実績を示す指標です。因みに、2019年はその数値は約8.7兆キロだそうです。想像できないレベルのとてつもなく大きな数値です。

It was in 1903 that the Wright brothers succeeded in developing the Wright Flyer. So, it’s still a little over 100 years. Since then, the aviation index, RPK (revenue passenger kilometers), has steadily increased while overcoming wars, terrorist incidents, and the global recession. This indicator is a measure of airlines’ passenger transport performance, calculated by multiplying the “number of passengers” by the “distance transported. in 2019, that number is about 8.7 trillion kilometers. This is a tremendously large number at a level we cannot imagine.

皆さんが思っている通り、コロナ禍が猛威をふるった2020年にこのRPKは急速に落ち込み、前年比▲66％となりました。一気に３分の１になった訳でとんでもない落ち込みですが、20年前の2000年と同じレベルです。20年前のRPKが今と同じレベルっていうのは不思議な感じがします。

As you may have guessed, in 2020, the year of Covid19 pandemic, the RPK dropped rapidly, down 66% from the previous year. It seems strange that RPK 20 years ago was at the same level as now.

飛行機はガソリンでは無く、ケロシンという軽油を燃料にしているケースが多いようです。当然航空燃料を満たす厳しい条件をクリアする必要があります。燃料は主翼と主翼付近の胴体に積まれているとのことです。毎回満タンで飛行するわけでは無いですが、満タンにすると100トン以上の燃料が詰めるらしいです。想像を超える量ですよね。現在の燃料も環境への配慮は一定なされていますが、航空業界でもさらなる環境配慮を目指すべく燃料についての議論があるようです。

In many cases, airplanes are fueled by kerosene, a light oil, rather than gasoline. Naturally, it has to meet the strict requirements of aviation fuel. The fuel is stored in the wings and in the fuselage near the wings. Not every flight is filled with fuel, but it is said that more than 100 tons of fuel can be packed when fully loaded. That’s a lot more than you can imagine. The current fuel is also environmentally friendly, but there seems to be a lot of discussion in the aviation industry about how to make the fuel even more environmentally friendly.

飛行機が開発されるまでは船か鉄道による移動です。日本やフィリピンといった島国では船に頼らざるを得ません。マニラから名古屋まで船で向かえばどれだけの時間がかかるんでしょうか。想像したくないレベルの時間がかかりますよね。

Until the development of the airplane, travel was by boat or train. In island countries like Japan and the Philippines, we have to rely on ships. I wonder how long it would take to get from Manila to Nagoya by boat. It would take a level of time that I don’t want to imagine.

フィリピン航空はChapter11（民事再生法みたいなもの）を申請し経営的には非常に苦しいです。人員削減等も行われてます。そんななかですがCAの皆さんは防護服でコロナ感染を回避しながらフィリピン人らしい明るい笑顔でサービスを提供してくれました。嬉しいですね。

Philippine Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 and is struggling financially. There is also a reduction in the workforce. Even in such tough situation, the CAs provided service with bright smiles that are typical of Filipinos with their protective suits for Covid19. I was very happy.

そんなことをつらつら考えていたら、予定よりも約１時間早くマニラから名古屋の飛行が終わりました。本日は４時間弱で着いてしまいました。

As I was thinking about this, the flight from Manila to Nagoya ended about an hour earlier than scheduled. It took me less than four hours.
