神の怒り／The Wrath of God

以下は、私がボケーっと考えたことで、何の科学的根拠もありません。

The following is just a random thought I had and has no scientific basis whatsoever.

バベルの塔は、人間が天にも届かん高い塔を建てようとしたことへの対抗として、神が人類の言葉をバラバラにした、というお話しだったと記憶しています。

II remember the story of the Tower of Babel, in which God tore apart the language of mankind as a response to man’s attempt to build a tower so high that it could reach the sky.

石炭や石油を掘り、燃料として電力を自由自在に操り、車、船、鉄道、飛行機が縦横無尽に行き交う光景を見ると、神様は何を思うのでしょうか。ひょっとしたら、地球を温暖化させることで人間に警鐘を鳴らしているのかも知れません。

What does God think when He sees cars, ships, trains, and airplanes coming and going in all directions, digging for coal and oil, and freely manipulating electricity as fuel? Perhaps He is sounding an alarm to human beings by making the earth warmer.

（神様のつぶやき）人間は本当に身勝手な生き物じゃ。動物も植物もそこまでの横暴は働かない。人間の行き過ぎを何とか食い止めんきゃならない。少し地球の温度を上げて、困らせてやろうかな。。。

God murmuring) Human beings are truly selfish creatures. Neither animals nor plants are capable of such arrogance. I have to do something to stop human beings’ excesses. Maybe I should raise the temperature of the earth a little to annoy them…

（人間界の議論）石炭や石油を燃やすと地球が温暖化する。温暖化の悪影響は災害の多発や食料問題など多岐にわたる。二酸化炭素の排出量を削減するために出来ることをしよう。太陽光、風力、水力など二酸化炭素を排出しない形で発電しなくちゃだめだ。まさに今起こっている議論です。20年後、30年後、は世界中に風車が配置され、太陽光パネルが設置されるでしょう。

(Discussion of the human beings) Burning coal and oil causes global warming. The negative effects of global warming range from more frequent disasters to food problems. Let’s do what we can to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We need to generate electricity in ways that do not emit carbon dioxide, such as solar, wind, and hydro power. In 20 or 30 years, there will be windmills and solar panels all over the world.

（神様のつぶやき）おお、人間も温暖化の危険について気づいたようじゃ。再生可能エネルギーとは、よく名付けたものじゃ。さて、どうなるかな。

(God murmuring) Oh, it seems that humans have realized the dangers of global warming. Renewable energy is a good name for it. Let’s see what happens.

（2050年ごろの地球）あれ、以前に比べて風が吹かなくなったようだ。太陽光もなんか弱くなったように思うんだけど。再生可能エネルギーの出力は落ちてきているぞ。世界中で電力不足が生じてしまった。困った。

(Earth in the year 2050) Hey, the wind doesn’t seem to be blowing as much as it used to. The sunlight seems to be getting weaker. Renewable energy output is dropping. There are power shortages all over the world. I’m in trouble.

（神様のつぶやき）人間はなんでも思い通りになるといつもいつも思うようじゃが、そうはいかん、ということじゃ。何か新しいやり方を考えつくかな？

(God murmuring) Human beings always seem to think that everything will turn out the way they want it to, but that’s not the case. Can they think of anything new to do?

私自身は、現在の地球温暖化が進行していること自体、人間が地球に支払うべき税金だ、というような考え方をしています。便利を追求し、好き勝手なことをすることは許さないよ、という警鐘だと思います。そういう考え方に立てば、太陽光や風から電力を得続けると考えること自体もそれほど保証されたことではないかと何となく心配します。勿論、石炭や石油を燃やすことに較べれば温暖化には良策なんでしょうが。

My own view is that the current global warming is itself a tax that humans should pay to the earth. I think it is a wake-up call that we should not allow ourselves to do whatever we want in pursuit of convenience. With that kind of thinking, I somehow worry that the idea of continuing to get power from sunlight and wind is not that much of a guarantee in itself. Of course, compared to burning coal and oil, it’s a better solution to global warming.

Hard Rock Cafe　一目惚れ/Love at first sight

これは、つい最近購入したHard Rock Cafe MakatiのＴシャツ。なんでわざわざブログで取り上げたか、というと、最初に見てから購入するまで２年間が経っていたから。

This is a Hard Rock Cafe Makati T-shirt that I recently purchased. The reason why I took the effort to post it on my blog is because it had been two years since I first saw it until I bought it.

マカティのHard Rock Cafeはもともと少し違った場所で営業をしていましたが、一旦閉店。再開したのは多分、2019年だったと思います。その時に、このTシャツいいなあ、と思ったのは2020年初だったのではないでしょうか。写真ではみにくいかも知れませんが、MAKATIという字でフィリピンの国旗が描かれています。

Hard Rock Cafe in Makati was originally operating in a slightly different location, but closed for a while. I think it was probably in 2019 when it reopened. Maybe It was probably in early 2020 when I thought, “I like this T-shirt”. It may be hard to see in the picture, but it has the Philippine flag with the word MAKATI on it.

タイトルの通り一目ぼれでしたが、PHP1800（約4000円）という値段がどういう訳だか私の購入を躊躇させました。そんなことをしていたら、コロナ禍により、折角再開したHard Rock Cafe Makatiは閉店。たまに店の前を通りかかる際には、扉には厳重な鍵がかけられ、この興味深いTシャツはそのままの場所に陳列されていました。

As the title says, I fell in love with it at first sight, but the price of PHP1800 (about 4000 yen) somehow made me hesitate to buy it. While I was doing that, Hard Rock Cafe Makati, which had just reopened , was closed due to the Covid19 pandemic. Every once in a while, I would pass by the store and the doors would be locked tightly and this interesting t-shirt was displayed in the same place.

そのまま閉店してしまうことも覚悟し、やはり、買いたいものは躊躇せず買うべきだったと後悔しておりました。フィリピンのコロナ禍は現在落ち着いており、少し期待して店の前を通ったら、何と再開。真っ先に購入した次第です。少し値上がりしてましたが、全く気にしません。

I was prepared for the store to be closed and regretted that I should have bought what I wanted without hesitation. The Covid19 pandemic in the Philippines has now settled down, and when I passed by the store with some expectations, to my surprise, it reopened. I bought this without hesitation. The price had gone up a bit, but I didn’t mind at all.

Hard Rock Cafeは観光地に行くと、帽子やらTシャツやら買ってしまいます。値段は高いのですが、デザインが洒落ていて、モノも丈夫です。最近は収集を辞めてしまいましたが、旅先ではStarbacksのマグカップを集めていました。こうした戦略はとても賢いブランド戦略だと思います。世界にはHard Rock CafeとかStarbacksの商品を収集している人が沢山居ると思います。

I buy caps and T-shirts from Hard Rock Cafe when I visit tourist spots. The prices are high, but the designs are stylish and the products are durable. I stopped collecting them recently, but I used to collect Starbacks mugs when I was traveling. I think such a strategy is a very smart brand strategy. I’m sure there are many people in the world who collect Hard Rock Cafe and Starbacks products.

教育の重要性については、誰もがその重要性について疑うことは無いと思います。とはいえ、教育って何なの？と聞かれるときちんと答えられない自分がおります。そういう時は定義をまず調べてみます。以下は文科省の教育の目的です。

I don’t think anyone can doubt about the importance of education. However, when I am asked, “What is education? I cannot answer to the question with confidence. In such cases, I look up the definition first. The following is the Japanese Ministry of Education’s definition of the purpose of education.

第1条（教育の目的）教育は、人格の完成をめざし、平和的な国家及び社会の形成者として、真理と正義を愛し、個人の価値をたつとび、勤労と責任を重んじ、自主的精神に充ちた心身ともに健康な国民の育成を期して行われなければならない。

Education shall be conducted with the aim of perfecting the personality and fostering healthy citizens, both mentally and physically, who love truth and justice, uphold the value of the individual, respect work and responsibility, and are full of independent spirit, as formers of a peaceful nation and society.

定義はやはり重要だと思います。改めて読むとそうなんだろうな、と思います。「勤労と責任を重んじ」というのは、日本らしいな、と思います。「心身ともに健康な」というのも非常に大切なことだと思います。

I think definitions are still important. When I read it again, I think it must be true. I think that “respecting work and responsibility” is very Japanese. I also think that “healthy in mind and body” is very important.

では、実際に学校で習っていること、を今一度考えてみたいと思います。

Now, I’d like to think again about what we actually learn in school.

国語：何を学ぶにしても国語が分かっていないと話になりません。非常に大切な教科だと思います。

National language: No matter what you learn, you need to understand language to be able to talk about it. I think it is a very important subject.

算数・数学：真理を愛する、という目的に対して算数・数学で学ぶことは非常に大切なことだと思います。勤労ということを考えても算数無しには語れない部分もあり、重要な教科だと思います。

Arithmetic: I think it is very important to learn arithmetic and mathematics for the purpose of loving the truth. I believe that math is an important subject because without math, we would not be able to talk about labor.

理科：算数・数学に通ずるものがありますよね。生物、物理、化学は真理を愛するという教育目的に叶ったものであり、欠くべからざる教科だと思います。

Science: It’s like math and arithmetic, isn’t it? Biology, physics, and chemistry fulfill the educational purpose of loving the truth, and I think they are indispensable subjects.

社会：歴史、地理、政治、経済、倫理など多岐にわたる教科を学びます。まさに教育の根幹をなす教科だと思います。

Social Studies: Students study a wide range of subjects such as history, geography, politics, economics, and ethics. It is truly a subject that forms the foundation of education.

体育：「心身ともに健康な」という考え方に照らせば、非常に大切な教科だと思います。一人でトレーニングすることも大切なことだと思いますが、学校でみんなで運動することは非常に大切なことでは無いかと思います。

Physical Education: In light of the concept of “healthy body and mind,” I think it is a very important subject. I think it’s important to train alone, but I also think it’s very important to exercise together at school.

図画工作（美術）：ものを作る、ということは人格形成にも少なからず作用すると思いますし、勤労ということを考えても重要な要素です。世界中の学校でこうした教科があるのかな、と少々疑問に思います。

Arts and crafts: I believe that creating things has a great impact on personality development, and it is also an important factor when considering work. I wonder if there is such a subject in schools around the world.

音楽：私自身が今では大好きな教科ですが、学生の頃は好きだったかな？と思う教科です。合奏、合唱、みんなで作り上げていく楽しみは「人格形成」や「心身の健康」に少なからず役に立ったとも思っています。世界中の学校で音楽ってあるんでしょうかね。

Music: This is a subject that I myself love now, but I wonder if I loved it when I was a student. I also think that the enjoyment of playing in ensembles, choruses, and building things together helped in “personality development” and “mental and physical health”. I wonder if there is music in schools all over the world.

家庭科：食や衣服といった生活・家事を扱う学科。現在では、消費生活についても小学校の高学年で学ぶようですね。少し興味深いです。

Home economics: A department that deals with daily life and household chores such as food and clothing. Nowadays, it seems that consumerism is also taught in the upper grades of elementary school. It is a little interesting.

外国語（英語）：英語を学ぶ目的は教育の目的としてどう整理するのか？って改めて考えると難しくないですか？勤務・業務を行う上で英語がほぼ不可欠だ、ということでしょうか。英語圏の方はあまり熱心に外国語を学ばないのは事実だと思いますから、教育の理念というよりは、社会人になった後の準備ということでしょうか？私は今英語を実際に使って業務をしていますから、英語を学校で学んでいて良かった、、と思いますが、かなりの方が英語を普段使わないのではないでしょうか。英語にどう取り組むのか、というのは難しい問題だと思います。

Foreign Language (English): How to organize the purpose of learning English as the purpose of education? Isn’t it difficult to think about it again? Does it mean that English is almost indispensable for working and conducting business? I think it’s true that native English-speaking people don’t study foreign languages with much enthusiasm, so it’s not so much a philosophy of education as it is a preparation for working life. I’m glad I learned English in school because I’m actually using it in my work now, but I think a lot of Japanese people don’t use English on a regular basis. I think it is a difficult question how to tackle English.

哲学とか倫理はもっと勉強しておけば良かったと思います。勿論、今からでも勉強は出来る訳であって、学校と教育の在り方も改めて考えると難しいように思います。

I wish I had studied more about philosophy and ethics. Of course, it is possible to study even now, and I think it is difficult to rethink the nature of schools and education.

なんでこんなことを急にブログに書き始めたかというと、教育の重要性は誰もが知っているのですが、子供の頃いやいや勉強をしていたなと思っているから。それは、教育の成果としてのテストだったり試験が本当に教育の目的に合致しているのかな？と思っているからです。そんなに簡単に答えの出るものでは無いし、世界各国でなんだかんだ言って学歴はそれなりに意味を持っているから、テストなりで他人よりも高い点を取ることは世界的にも意味のあることだと思われているんでしょうね。勿論、テストの仕方には世界で大きな差があるでしょうね。

The reason why I suddenly started to write about this in my blog is because everyone knows the importance of education, but I feel that I was reluctant to study as a child and I wondered if tests and exams as an outcome of education are really in line with the purpose of education. It’s not something that can be answered so easily. I guess getting a higher score than others on a test or something like that is considered to be a meaningful thing in the world. Of course, there will be huge differences in the way tests are administered around the world.

フィリピン・シャルガオ島／Philipines Siargao Island

このブログは7/28のブログとほぼ同じです。ブログを書き始めたばかりでほとんどの方の眼に触れていないので、再掲載します。

This blog is almost the same as the one on July 28. I am reposting it because I just started blogging and it has not been seen by most people.

フィリピンの島の数は、ほんの数年前までは、7107と言われてきました。でも、今は7641が正式な島の数のようです。

Until just several years ago, the number of islands in the Philippines was said to be 7107. But now it seems that 7641 is the official number of islands.

島の定義は下記の通りです。The definition of Island is as below.

自然に形成された陸地であること。　It is a naturally formed land.
水に囲まれていること。　　　　　　Being surrounded by water.
高潮時に水没しないこと。　　　　　Do not submerge in water during high tides.

特に小さい島は正確に把握し、数えることが難しいんだと思います。よって、フィリピンだけでなく日本など世界各国で島の数を正確に把握することは難しいと思います。因みに日本の島の数は6852と公表されています。

I think it’s hard to get an accurate grasp and count of the islands, especially the smaller ones. Therefore, it is difficult to know the exact number of islands not only in the Philippines but also in Japan and other countries around the world. The number of islands in Japan has been published as 6852.

さて、フィリピンには魅力的な島が沢山あります。前回紹介したカランガマン島も素晴らしいのですが、本日紹介するシャルガオ島はフィリピンの魅力を凝縮したような島だと思っています。

Well, there are many attractive islands in the Philippines. Kalanggaman Island, which I introduced before, is wonderful, and also I think Siargao Island, which I introduce today, is an island that condenses the charm of the Philippines.

一度しか行っておらず、偉そうなことは言えないのですが、サーフィンの聖地でもある海もさることながら、無数に生えるココナツ、川や滝、魅力満載です。シャルガオ島からアイランドホッピングもお勧めです。下の写真はGuyam Islandをドローンで撮りました。本当に小さな島ですが、本を読むのに最適な島だなと思いました。

I’ve only been there once, so I can’t speak fully, but it’s apparently full of charm, with its countless coconuts, rivers and waterfalls, as well as the sea, which is a sacred place for surfing. Island hopping from Siarlgao Island is also recommended. The photo below shows Guyam Island by drone. It’s a really small island, I thought it was the perfect island to read a book.

コロナ禍がある程度収束し、自由に旅行に行けるようになれば、迷いなく再訪したいところです。

When the Covid19 pandemic is somewhat under control and I can travel freely, I would like to revisit without hesitation.

前回は、Siargao Bleuというかなり高級なホテルに泊まりました。その時には１泊約２万円くらいだったのですが、それだけの価値はあると思います。

Last time, I stayed at Siargao Bleu Resort, a rather expensive hotel. It cost about USD200 per night, I think it was worth it.

次回は自転車を持参し、島を一周したい。

Next time, I want to bring my bike and go around the island.

フィリピン株式市場2021年11月末／Philippines Stock Market as of Nov. 2021

あまり注目されることが無いことは存じておりますが、月末にはフィリピン株式市場を振り返ることにしています。11月30日は祝日（Bonifacio Day）なので、11月29日のデータを記載しています。

I know it doesn’t get a lot of attention, but at the end of the month I try to look back at the Philippine stock market. As November 30 is a national holiday (Bonifacio Day), I have included data for November 29.

PSEiNov2021 Download

特に、目立った動きは無いのですが、全体としてはコロナ禍の状況がかなり落ち着いたため、上昇傾向にあったように思います。30銘柄からなるPSEiは、９月末:6952.88、10月末:7054.70、11月末:7200.88とわずかではありますが、上昇しています。

There is no significant movement, but the overall trend seems to have been upward as the Covid19 pandemic situation has calmed down considerably. The PSEi, which consists of 30 stocks, rose slightly to 6952.88 at the end of September, 7054.70 at the end of October, and 7200.88 at the end of November.

一方、これを記載している本日（12/1）はオミクロン株に関して米国の株式市場の下げていることを受けてか、大きく下落しています(6947.06)。１日で９月末レベルまで逆戻りしてしまいました。

On the other hand, as I write this today (Dec. 1), PSEi has fallen sharply (6947.06), probably due to the decline in the U.S. stock market, and has returned to the level at the end of September in one day.

因みに緑色でハイライトしている銘柄は９月末よりも２０％以上騰がっている銘柄、オレンジ色でハイライトしている会社は９月末よりも２０％以上下がっている銘柄です。

Stocks highlighted in green are those that have risen 20% or more from the end of September, while companies highlighted in orange are those that have fallen 20% or more from the end of September.

株式市場が上昇することだけが良いことではありませんが、株式市場が経済状態やその先行指標として一種のバロメータになっていることは事実だと思います。12月は大きく下げてスタートしましたが、持ち直してもらいたいです。

Although rising stock prices are not the only good thing, it is true that the stock market is a kind of barometer for the state of the economy and a leading indicator. I would like to see the stock pick up after starting December with a big drop.

苦言。フィリピン株式市場は未だに9:30から13:00までの短縮取引時間となっています。長ければ良いということでは無いのかも知れませんが、コロナ禍を理由に取引時間を短縮することを続けすぎだと思います。市場関係者のやる気のなさを感じております。ただでさえ世界的には存在感の薄いフィリピン株式市場です。フィリピンという国の威信にかけて盛り上げて欲しいと市場参加者の一人として思います。

A complaint. The Philippine stock market still has shortened trading hours from 9:30am to 1:00pm. Maybe longer is not better, but I think they keep shortening the trading hours too much because of the corona disaster. I feel a lack of motivation on the part of market participants. The Philippine stock market does not have a strong presence in the global market. As a market participant, I would like to see the Philippine stock market flourish with the prestige of the country.

音楽、映画、本／Music, Movie, Book

音楽は一度だけ聴いておしまい、という曲はあまりない。よほど合わないとか無い限り。そもそも合わなさそうな曲は聴かない。「この新曲いまいちだなあ」、と思っていても聴いているたびに、耳に入ってくるたびに好きになっていく曲が沢山あった。むしろ最初いまいちだなあと思った曲の方が今でも好きという曲のほうが多いように思う。

There are not many pieces of music that I listen to only once and be done with it. Unless it doesn’t suit me very well. I don’t listen to music that doesn’t seem to fit me. There have been many songs that I thought “I don’t like this new song,” but as I listened to them, I came to like them more and more. In fact, I think there are more songs that I still like than songs that I initially thought were not so good.

映画は私の場合、ほとんどが一度観たらそれっきりになってしまっている。ただ、「New Cinema Paradise」とか「アパートの鍵貸します」とか「カサブランカ」「ローマの休日」「街の灯」「キッド」「雨に唄えば」といった大好きな作品は何度も観ている。こうして書いていてももう一度観たい、何度も観たいと思える。結果が分かっていても。もう一回観ることで新たな発見や素晴らしさの再発見があるように思う。無くても観ている間は楽しめる。

In my case, most of the movies I watch once and never see them again. However, I have seen many of my favorite films such as “New Cinema Paradise,” “The Apartment,” “Casablanca,” “Roman Holiday,” “City Lights,” “The Kid,” and “Singing in the Rain” many times. Even as I write this, I can’t help but want to see them again and again. Even if I know the outcome. I think there are new discoveries and rediscoveries of greatness to be made by watching them again. Even if I don’t find out new things, I can simply enjoy it while watching it.

テレビドラマなどを観ていて最近凄く感じる。僕は、「製作者の狙い」、「視聴者に伝えたいこと」、「役者の意図」などを一度視聴しただけでは理解できていない。あらすじを追っただけになってしまっている。

Watching TV dramas, I have been feeling this way a lot lately. I don’t understand “what the producers want”, “what they want to convey to the viewers”, “what the actors want”, etc. just by watching them once. I have only followed the synopsis.

名作と言われる映画やテレビドラマは、伏線が張り巡らされていて、それが終盤になってから生きてくるということも多い。だから「北の国から」とか「仁」とか不朽の名作は何度も観たい。

Movies and TV dramas that are considered masterpieces often have a lot of hidden foreshadowing that comes to life towards the end. That’s why I like to watch immortal masterpieces like “Kitanokunikara” and “Jin” over and over again.

さて、本はどうだろう。何度も読んだ本ってあまり無いように思う。学生の頃に、これは読まなきゃと思って、読了して満足している本が多いのではないかと思う。作者の伝えたいことをどこまで分かっているんだろう。下手すると内容すら覚えていない本が少なくない。世の中には名著と呼ばれる本は沢山ある、ただ、「読了」で満足して良いような名著は無いと思う。

Well, what about books? I don’t think there are many books that I read over and over again. I think most of them are books that I thought I had to read when I was a student, and then I finished them and was satisfied with them. I wonder how much I understand what the author is trying to say. There are many books that I don’t even remember the contents. There are many great books in the world, but I don’t think there are any great books that we can be satisfied with having read once.

と、言うことで、一時帰国した際には、冒頭の三島由紀夫の金閣寺を敢えて買って読んだ。流石の名著である。引き込まれるように読んだ。でも、一度読んだだけでは描写の比喩していること、など理解できていないに違いない。記憶が鮮明なうちに繰り返しもう一度読むことで、音楽のように何度も何度も繰り返し聴くことでもっと好きになる感覚を読書でも体験することを試してみる。

So, when I temporarily returned to Japan, I dared to buy and read the first book, Kinkakuji by Yukio Mishima. It is a quintessential masterpiece. I was drawn into reading it. However, after reading it once, I must not have understood the metaphorical meaning of the description. By reading it again and again while my memory is still vivid, I will try to experience the same feeling I get from reading a book as I do from listening to music over and over again.

これからの読書は、本棚にすでにある読了した本を読み返すことにしたい。

From now on, my reading will be to reread the books that I have already read on my bookshelf.

なんかワクワクしてきた。

トルコリラ／Turkish Lira（2）

１１月１日のブログではトルコリラを取り上げました。ブログのネタが尽きてきたこと、イスタンブールは絶対に再訪したい都市で、次回は１か月、２か月と「暮らすような旅」がしたいと思っているためです。

In my November 1 blog, I discussed the Turkish lira. This is because I am running out of material for my blog, Istanbul is a city I definitely want to revisit, and next time I would like to “travel like living” for a month or two months.

トルコ・リラ／Turkish Lira – Freer than Bird/鳥よりも自由

詳しくは前回の記事をご覧いただきたいのですが、2015年初には1トルコリラが50円くらいだったのが、どんどん下がってきて、2021年10月末時点で1トルコリラが12円くらいになってしまいました。という記事でした。

For details, please refer to my previous article. 1 Turkish Lira was about 50 yen at the beginning of 2015, but it has been dropping rapidly, and as of the end of October 2021, 1 Turkish Lira is about 12 yen. That was the article.

さらにトルコリラが大きく下がっています。1トルコリラが10を割り込み、一時的には1トルコリラが8円台まで下がりました。現在は少し戻しており、9円辺りで推移しています。

In addition, the Turkish lira has dropped significantly; the value of one Turkish lira has fallen below 10, and at one point, the value of one Turkish lira dropped to the 8 yen level. It has now regained some ground and is hovering around yen/Lira.

この大きな下落の引き金になったのは、エルドアン大統領が11月22日に行った発言「金利を引き下げることがインフレーションを抑制することにつながる」だそうです。通常、インフレーションを抑えるためには利上げをし、通貨を防衛しなくてはいけませんが、大統領はその逆のことを公言してしまいました。

The trigger for this big drop was President Erdogan’s statement on November 22, “Lowering interest rates will help curb inflation”. Normally, in order to curb inflation, a central bank has to raise interest rates and defend the value of currency, but the president has publicly stated the opposite.

通常中央銀行は政府からの独立性を保って金融政策を打ち立てる必要がありますが、大統領は中央銀行の金融政策にも介入しています。トルコリラが安定するには大統領が市場の声を聴くように改心するか（可能性は小さいでしょう）、大統領を変更するしか無いと思います（どうしてそういう動きにならないのか分かっていませんが）。

Normally, the central bank needs to maintain its independence from the government to formulate monetary policy, but the president Erdogan is intervening in the monetary policy of the central bank as well. The only way for the Turkish lira to stabilize is for the president to change his mind and listen to the market (unlikely) or Turkish citizen has to change the president(I don’t know why this is not happening).

物価上昇率が年率20％近くに達してしまっており、当然ですが人々の生活も大いに混乱していると思います。日本のように物価はあがらず、金利もゼロという世の中がずっと続いている人間には想像できない生活だと思います。

Prices have been rising at an annual rate of nearly 20%, which of course has caused a lot of confusion in people’s lives. I think it is unimaginable for people who have been living in a world like Japan, where prices do not rise and interest rates are zero.

熱田神宮／Atsuta Shrine

東海三県（愛知、岐阜、三重）に住んでいる人はみんな知っていると思いますが、ひょっとすると全国的な知名度はそこまで高く無いかも知れません。ただ、初詣の人出はランキングによって微妙に順位や人数が違いますが、こんな感じだそうです。熱田神宮は日本でもトップテンにランクされる人出だそうです。

I think everyone who lives in the three prefectures of Tokai (Aichi, Gifu, and Mie) knows about ”Atsuta Shrine”, but perhaps it is not that well known nationwide. The number of people who come to the shrine/temple for Hatsumode, (New Year’s Visit to shrine/temple), is slightly different depending on the ranking, but it is said to be like below. Atsuta Shrine is said to be one of the top ten most visited shrines/temples in Japan.

岐阜県可児市に住む私も何度か初詣に熱田神宮へお参りしましたが、最近は近場の犬山成田山に初詣する機会のほうが増えました。

Living in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, I have visited Atsuta Shrine several times for Hatsumode (New Year’s visit), but lately I have been visiting Inuyama Naritasan, a nearby shrine, more often.

先日一時帰国で名古屋に行った時には、初詣でしか行ったことの無い熱田神宮に行ってみたくなり、訪問しました。初詣は人の波に押されて景色も何も見えなくってあまり記憶に残っていないものです。

When I went to Nagoya for a temporary visit the other day, I wanted to visit the Atsuta Shrine, which I had only been to for Hatsumode. I don’t really remember the Atsuta Shrine because I couldn’t see any scenery due to the waves of people.

調べたことを記載しますと以下の通りです。本当はもっと多くの特徴を有しています。

The following is a description of what I found out. The truth is that it has many more features.

・三種の神器の一つ草薙神剣をまつっている

　It is dedicated to the Kusanagi Sword, one of the three sacred treasures.

・約1,900年の歴史を有している。

　It has a history of about 1,900 years.

・神社の格としては伊勢神宮に次ぐ高い地位

　The second highest rank of shrines after Ise Shrine.

・約19万平米の掲題には樹齢１０００年を超える楠の木が何本もある

　There are several camphor trees that are over 1,000 years old in the 190,000 square meter area.

名鉄名古屋駅から２駅、神宮前駅で降りるとすぐに熱田神宮の森が見えています。そこから境内に入ると、木々に日光が遮られて日中でも暗く、ひんやりとした独特の空気が流れていることに気づきます。前述の通り、初詣は人しか見えないような状況でしたが、七五三をお祝いしている方が少々いたくらいで、本当に落ち着いて熱田神宮を散策出来ました。大きな楠の木は立派の一言。樹齢1000年を超える木を間近に見ることだけでも訪問した意味があった、と思えるほどです。

As soon as you get off at Jingumae Station, two stops from Meitetsu Nagoya Station, you can see the forest of Atsuta Shrine. As you enter the shrine grounds from there, you will notice that the trees block out the sunlight, making it dark even in the daytime, and the air is cool and unique. As I mentioned earlier, I could only see people Hatsumode/New Year Visit to the shrine, but there were only a few people celebrating Shichi-Go-San (the seven-five-three festival), so I was able to really calmly stroll around Atsuta Shrine. The large camphor tree was simply magnificent. It was worth the visit just to see the tree, which is over 1000 years old.

普段全く宗教とは無縁な私ですが、神妙な気持ちでお参りさせて頂きました。お守りも購入したので、健康な生活を送れると思います。

I am not usually associated with religion at all, but I was able to visit the shrine with a religious feeling. I also bought a good-luck charm so I can lead a healthy life.

七五三をお祝いしているご家族を拝見するのも何とも嬉しいことでございます。熱田神宮での七五三のお祝いは何とも晴れがましく、記念に残るお祝いとなることでしょう。

It is a great joy to see families celebrating the “seven – five – three years old birth of their children”. The celebration at Atsuta Jingu will be a wonderful and memorable one.

名古屋のど真ん中ともいえる場所にこれだけ大きな敷地で神宮が守られていることは素晴らしいことです。急に思いついて訪問することとなりましたが、本当に貴重な訪問となりました。アクセスも素晴らしいので名古屋に行く際には訪問することとしたいです。

It is wonderful that the shrine is in such a large area in the middle of Nagoya. It was a spur-of-the-moment visit, but it turned out to be a really valuable one. The access to the shrine is excellent, so I will visit it whenever I go to Nagoya.

富山旅行／Travel to Toyama （３）

嫌というほど海産物を食べた我々は、ホテルの朝食も洋食を選ぶほどでした。３日目も半日あったので、私が黒部渓谷の方に紅葉を愛でに行きたいとリクエストいたしました。宇奈月温泉の方面です。実は宇奈月温泉での宿泊を考えていたのですが、泊まりたい宿は一杯でした。観光客が戻ってきて良いことです。

We ate so much seafood these 2 days that we even chose to have Western breakfast at the hotel, and since we had half a day on the third day, I requested to go to Kurobe Valley to enjoy the autumn leaves. This was in the direction of Unazuki Onsen. We were actually thinking of staying in Unazuki Onsen, but the hotel we wanted to stay at was full. It’s good that tourists are coming back.

さて、宇奈月温泉は思いのほか早く着きました。我々はトロッコ列車に乗ることは考えていませんでした。往復で約4,000円。決して安く無いのでお客様乗っているかな、と少々心配しながら列車を眺めるとお客様で満員、これは嬉しいことです。宇奈月温泉が一杯で泊まれなかったのもうなづけます。

Well, we arrived at Unazuki Onsen earlier than expected. We hadn’t thought of taking the trolley train. The round trip cost about 4,000 yen. We were happy to see that the train was full of passengers, although we were a little worried about whether there would be passengers since it was not cheap. That is why we couldn’t stay at Unazuki Onsen.

紅葉と赤い橋が何ともマッチして素晴らしいです。それでいて真っ赤という訳では無く、自然な紅葉なのかな、と思いました。歩いて川沿いを散策。黒部川には沢山のダムが作られていることを学びます。確かに海に向かって滑り落ちるように流れているようにも思えますから、ダムに適しているようにも思います。

The autumn leaves and the red bridge are a wonderful match. However, it was not all red, so I thought it was just natural autumn colors. We walked along the river. We learned that there are many dams being built on the Kurobe River. The river seems to be flowing down to the sea, so it seems to be suitable for dams.

宇奈月温泉周辺の散策を終え、私は黒部宇奈月温泉駅まで送ってもらいました。北陸新幹線のはくたかに乗れば、富山まではたかだか１２分で着きます。北陸新幹線には乗ったことがあるかどうかわかりませんが、これも私にとっては貴重な体験です。駅周辺はこれから栄えるのだと思います。

After a walk around Unazuki Onsen, I was dropped off at Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station. If we take the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Hakutaka, you can get to Toyama in just 12 minutes. I don’t know if I’ve ever ridden the Hokuriku Shinkansen before, but this is another valuable experience for me. I think the area around the station will be crowded in the near future.

富山での昼食はどうしようか迷いましたが、サイゼリヤの看板が目に入ってきて、これしかない、と思いました。富山だからという訳ではありませんが、サイゼリヤは日本のファミリーレストランで圧倒的トップだと思います。全ての日本への旅行者の方には一度はサイゼリヤに行かれることをお薦めします。コストパフォーマンスに優れています。それでいて吉野家のように５分で食べて外に出る必要もありません。

I wasn’t sure what to do for lunch in Toyama, but when I saw the sign for Saizeriya, I knew it was the only way to go. Not necessarily because it was in Toyama, but I think that Saizeriya is by far the best family restaurant in Japan. I recommend every traveler to Japan to go to Saizeriya at least once. It has excellent cost performance. And you don’t have to eat in 5 minutes and walk out like Yoshinoya.

昼食を終え、行きと同様に特急ひだで家路につきます。実家にはマスずしをお土産に購入。両親と食しました。大変美味しいマスずしでした。こうして私の初の富山旅行は充実のフィナーレを迎えました。案内、運転をしてくれたO君には感謝の気持ちしかございません。

After lunch, I took the limited express train, ”Hida”, to go home. I bought some trout sushi as a gift for my parents. I ate it with my parents. It was a very tasty trout sushi. Thus my first trip to Toyama came to a fulfilling finale. I have nothing but gratitude for Mr. O who guided me and drove me.

富山旅行／Travel to Toyama （２）

初日は富山市内中心の旅行で、夕食をハシゴするという豪勢な一日でした。２日目は友達の運転でドライブ中心の旅行になりました。

The first day was a trip around Toyama City, where we had a great day of dinner and drinks. The second day was more of a driving trip with my friend driving.

まずは、海王丸が停泊している海王丸パークへ。上手く写真に撮れませんでしたが、写真映えする新湊大橋もすぐ近くです。新湊きっときと市場も有名なスポットです。きっときとは「魚介類が新鮮な」という意味の方言だそうです。魅力的な海鮮中心のお土産市場をぶらぶらと歩いてから、さらに西に向かいます。

First, we went to Kaioumaru Park, where the Kaioumaru is docked. I couldn’t get a good picture of it, but it’s also close to the Shinminato Bridge, which is very photogenic. The ”Shinminato Kittokito Market” is another famous spot. The word “Kittokito” is said to be a dialect word meaning “fresh seafood”. After wandering around the attractive seafood-centered souvenir market, we headed further west.

雨晴海岸、そこに隣接する「道の駅雨晴」へ。富山湾は水深の深さが有名なので、浜辺は無いのかなと思っていましたが、雨晴海岸には砂浜があったので少々びっくりしました。島というか岩も見事でなかなか見応えのある景色でした。

We went to Ameharashi Beach and the adjacent “Roadside Station Ameharashi”. Toyama Bay is famous for its deep waters, so I thought there would be no beach, but I was a little surprised to find a sandy beach at Ameharashi Beach. The island, or rather the rocks, were also magnificent and quite a sight to behold.

更に西へ向かい、氷見へ。氷見漁港場外市場は、何とも魅力溢れる市場でしたが、我々はその途中に見つけたお店で海鮮丼です。お客さんがいまいちおらず少し心配でしたが、それは杞憂。大変ご立派な海鮮丼でした。

We headed further west to Himi. The Himi Fishing Port Market was full of charm, but we decided to have a seafood bowl at a restaurant we found on the way. We were a little worried because there were not many customers, but our fears were unfounded. It was very nice lunch.

昼食後は、富山唯一の国宝を有する高岡瑞龍寺へ。途中、日本三大仏にも数えられる高岡大仏も車から眺めます。奈良、鎌倉と較べてしまうと少し見劣りするように思ってしまいました。高岡瑞龍寺は加賀前田家２代当主の前田利長の菩提寺だけあり、立派の一言でした。一方、これだけ立派なお寺なのに門前町が全く無く、ここまでのお寺なのに勿体ないなあ、と思いました。多分、これから観光地としてもっと整備されていくでしょう。

After lunch, we drove to Takaoka Zuiryu-ji Temple, which has the only national treasure in Toyama. On the way, we saw the Takaoka Great Buddha, one of the three largest Buddhas in Japan, from the car. I thought it was a bit inferior compared to the one of Nara and Kamakura. Takaoka Zuiryuji Temple is the family temple of Toshinaga Maeda, the second head of the Maeda family in Kaga, and it was magnificent. On the other hand, for such a splendid temple, there was no town in front of the temple, which I thought was a shame for such a great temple. Perhaps it will be developed more as a tourist attraction in the future.

私のリクエストで、一気に東に移動して称名滝へ。高速を使ったりすればそこまで時間はかからなさそうだったので、トライしました。途中車窓からの立山連峰の景色も素晴らしかったです。称名滝は駐車場から展望台までは少々距離がありますが、ひんやりとした空気が何とも気持ちよかったです。称名滝は高さ350Mと日本一の落差を誇るだけあり、迫力も美しさも際立っていました。リクエストして良かったです。

At my request, we moved east to Shomei Falls. It didn’t seem to take that long if we used the expressway or something, so we gave it a try. The view of the Tateyama mountain range from the car window on the way was wonderful. It was a little bit far from the parking lot to the viewing platform, but the cool air felt really nice. Shomyo Fall is the highest waterfall in Japan with a height of 350 meters, and it was both powerful and beautiful. I’m glad I requested it.

２日目は魚津市での宿泊です。友人推奨の金太郎温泉には日帰り温浴で訪問です。友人が勧めるだけあって、硫黄の匂いが強烈で、少し口に含むと塩分を感じる温泉でした。汗もたくさんかき、食事を美味しく食べられる環境が整った気分になりました。

On the second day, we stayed in Uozu City. I took a both at Kintaro Onsen, which was recommended by a friend. The hot spring had a strong smell of sulfur and a little salt in the mouth. I sweated a lot and felt like I was in the right environment to enjoy a good dinner.

ホテルがお寿司屋さんと提携しており、宿泊にお寿司が付いてきます。随分お得なプランでした。お寿司も大変美味しかったです。ただ、お客さんがとても多く、ホテル宿泊客も押し寄せ、食事の提供が追い付かない感じがありました。お寿司屋さんとホテルとの提携が功を奏すのかな、と少々心配しました。２日目も夕食をハシゴしました。

The hotel has a partnership with a sushi restaurant, and sushi is included in the price. It was a very good deal. The sushi was also very delicious. However, there were so many guests and it seemed like the food service could not keep up with them, The sushi restaurant was good, but I was a little worried that the partnership with the hotel would not work. so we decided to go another restaurant for the rest of dinner.

海鮮を売りにする居酒屋はお客様が多く、なかなかお店が決まりませんでした。やっとのことで見つけた居酒屋で食べた雑炊は写真を撮り忘れましたが本当に美味しかった。お店の名前も憶えてなくて申し訳ないですが、素晴らしかったです。

The izakaya that sells seafood had a lot of customers and it was hard to find a place to eat. I forgot to take a picture of the rice porridge I ate at the Izakaya I finally found, and also I do not remember the name of Izakaya, it was really delicious.

２日目も満腹、心地よい酔いの中で早い時間に寝てしまいました。友人には感謝の気持ちしかありません。

The second day I went to bed early with a full stomach and a pleasant drunkenness. I have nothing but gratitude for my friends.

富山旅行／Travel to Toyama

私の故郷岐阜県は、愛知県、三重県、滋賀県、福井県、石川県、富山県、長野県の7県と接していますが、富山県と福井県には行ったことがありませんでした。大学時代からの友人が富山に居り、一時帰国を利用して２泊３日の富山旅行に行って参りました。

My hometown Gifu Prefecture is bordered by seven prefectures, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Fukui, Ishikawa, Toyama and Nagano, but I have never been to Toyama and Fukui. A friend from my university days is in Toyama, and I took advantage of my temporary return to Japan to go on a 3-day, 2-night trip to Toyama.

岐阜県から富山県に行くには、電車とバスが基本ですが、私はJRの特急ひだに乗って富山まで行きました。美濃太田駅から約３時間の列車の旅です。

The basic way to get to Toyama Prefecture from Gifu Prefecture is by train or bus, I took the JR Limited Express Hida to Toyama. It is around three-hour train ride from Mino-Ota station.

富山駅に１２:３０に到着。友達とまずは昼食です。富山でブラックラーメンは外せない、ということで昼食はラーメンです。色はややキツイですが、味は上品です。美味しいラーメンを日本でどうしても食べておきたかったので、大満足です。

Arrived at Toyama Station at 12:30. My friends and I had lunch first. We couldn’t miss the black ramen in Toyama, so we had ramen for lunch. The color is a little harsh, but the taste is elegant. I really wanted to try good ramen in Japan, so I was very satisfied.

昼食後、ホテルで荷物を下ろした後は富山市内の観光です。岩瀬浜という古い街並みが残る地域に路面電車で移動です。富山は路面電車が活躍していて好感が持てますね。

After lunch, we dropped off our luggage at the hotel and went sightseeing in Toyama City. We took the streetcar to Iwase-hama, an area where old streets still remain. Toyama is a city where streetcars are very active, and I have a good feeling about it.

岩瀬浜の駅から少し歩くと、歴史を忍ばせる建物が見えてきました。富山も「米どころ、水どころ」ですから、酒造りが盛んですね。満寿泉を試飲できるお洒落なスポットで試飲です。最高級の日本酒を試飲させて頂き、危険なほどの飲みやすさに驚愕しました。

A short walk from the Iwase-hama station, we saw a building that reminds you of history. Toyama is also known for its rice and water, so sake brewing is very popular. We went to a trendy spot where we could sample Masuizumi. I was astonished at the dangerous drinkability of this top-quality sake.

馬場家、森家の北前船主・廻船問屋の豪邸など見どころ満載でした。そうは言ってもやはり楽しいのは試飲ですかね。馬場家の蔵ではビールの試飲が出来ました。

The Baba family and the Mori family’s mansions as shipowners and shipping wholesalers were full of sights to see. Having said that, the most enjoyable part was the beer tasting. At the Baba family’s brewery, we were able to taste beer.

「吟魚」という非常に評判の高いお店を7：30に予約してもらっていましたが、「天よし」というお店も捨て難い、という話になり、５時に「天よし」に行くことにしました。何とも贅沢な話です。今晩はDinnerがダブルヘッダーです。

We had a reservation at “Gingyo”, a restaurant with a very good reputation, for 7:30 p.m., but we decided to go to “Tenyoshi” at 5:00 p.m., because we thought we have to visit “Tenyhoshi”. What a luxury! We will have 2 dinners.

天よしでは、白エビ丼もしくは白エビかき揚げをメインに考えておりましたが、聞くと随分立派な「のどぐろ」があるとのこと。それだ、ということになり、白エビのかき揚げとのどぐろの焼き物をメインに頼みました。

At “Tenyoshi”, we had a plan to eat a bowl of rice topped with white shrimp or kakiage (fried white shrimp) as our main dish, but chef told that they had very nice nodoguro, a kind of seabass. We decided to take it. We ordered kakiage (fried white shrimp) and grilled nodoguro as our main dishes.

写真では伝わりにくいですが、富山在住の友人をしても立派なのどぐろだそうで、上品に脂の乗ったのどぐろを堪能でき、幸せでした。「天よし」さんは、気前の良いお父さんと可愛らしいお母さんが地場の魚介類を提供している素晴らしいお店です。岩瀬浜をご訪問の際には是非お立ち寄りすることお勧めします。

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but my friend who lives in Toyama told me that the nodoguro was magnificent, and I was happy to enjoy the elegantly fatty nodoguro. “Tenyoshi” is a wonderful restaurant where a generous father and lovely mother serve local seafood. I highly recommend stopping by if you are ever in Iwase-hama.

富山市に戻り、「世界一美しい店舗」に選ばれたスターバックス富山冠水公園店を訪問しました。夜景にスターバックスが映え、確かに素晴らしいのですが、世界一か？と言われると正直疑問です。調べたら２００８年にStore of the Year Design Awardの最優秀賞を獲得していますから看板に偽りはありませんね。こうした話題性で訪れる人が居るのも事実でしょうから、これからも有名店として頑張って欲しいです。

Back in the city of Toyama, we visited the Starbucks Toyama Kansui Koen store, which was selected as the “World’s Most Beautiful Store”. The night view of the Starbucks is certainly wonderful, but I honestly doubt that it is the most beautiful store in the world. I did some research and found out that it won the “Store of the Year Design Award in 2008”, so I guess the the reputation is true. I’m sure it’s true that there are people who come to the store because of this buzz, so I hope they continue to do their best as a famous store.

「吟魚」まで歩くことで美味しい海産物を味わう準備が整いました。店には行列が。予約が無ければどうにもなりませんでした。入店後も空きを確認する電話がかなりの頻度でかかってきていました。人気店ですね。人気が出るのも納得の素晴らしさでした。

By walking to “Gingyo”, we were ready to taste the delicious seafood. There was a line in front of the restaurant. Without a reservation, there was nothing we could do. After we entered the restaurant, there were a lot of phone calls to confirm availability. It’s a popular restaurant. It was wonderful, and I can understand why it is so popular.

刺身盛り合わせ、全て美味しかったです。これで1,500円。コストパフォーマンスが半端無いです。他の注文も全て美味しかったです。とりわけ、シラスに卵の黄身を乗っけたものは印象に残っています。ごはんはお腹が一杯で頼みませんでしたが、ごはんにぴったりですね。Dinner第2ラウンドとしてお邪魔しましたが、美味しさと安さに圧倒された「吟魚」さんでした。

The sashimi platter was all delicious. 1,500 yen for this. The cost performance is unbelievable. Everything else we ordered was also delicious. We were particularly impressed with the shirasu(small white fishes) with egg yolk on top. We didn’t order rice because we were too full, but it went perfectly with the rice… We visited “Gingyo” as the second round of dinner, and we were overwhelmed by the deliciousness and cheapness of the food.

ホテルまで歩き、お風呂に入ったらその後は爆睡でした。こうして、盛りだくさんの富山旅行第一日が終了しました。

After walking to the hotel and taking a bath, I fell asleep. Thus ended the first day of our exciting trip to Toyama!

名古屋／Nagoya

名古屋は言うまでも無く、日本の主要都市。東京、大阪、名古屋と言われることもありますが、人口だけで見ますと、日本４位の都市になります。

Nagoya is one of the major cities in Japan. It is sometimes referred to as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, but in terms of population alone, it is the fourth largest city in Japan.

こんな感じです。札幌ももうすぐ２００万人都市の仲間入りでしょうか。横浜は東京に近過ぎるし、人口の多さで勝負していないし（私が勝手にそう思っています）、何とも独特ですよね。

Sapporo will soon be one of the cities with 2 million people. Yokohama is too close to Tokyo, and it doesn’t compete in terms of population (that’s what I think), and it’s kind of unique.

さて、岐阜県の愛知県境で育った私は、買い物は名古屋に出掛けます。岐阜市に出掛けることはありません。今回、一時帰国したときも買い物やミュージカルは名古屋に行ってました。大昔は名古屋周辺はほとんど何もなく、買い物には栄の方まで行ってましたが、１９９９年にＪＲセントラルタワーが建ち、高島屋と東急ハンズが出来た後は栄に行くことは無くなりました。その後も名古屋駅周辺が本当に立派になりました。

I grew up in Gifu Prefecture on the border of Aichi Prefecture, so I go to Nagoya for shopping. I never go out to Gifu City. Even when I was back in Japan temporarily this time, I went to Nagoya for shopping and musicals. In the past, there was almost nothing around Nagoya and I used to go to Sakae for shopping, but after the JR Central Tower was built in 1999 and Takashimaya and Tokyu Hands were opened, I stopped going to Sakae. The area around Nagoya Station became really magnificent.

The Nagoya Mode Gakuen building is also very cool. The Dainagoya Building has also been reborn.

さて、名古屋には本当にお世話になっているのですが、日本での好感度はいまいちだと思います。どうしてでしょうかね。良いところだと思うんですけどね。セントレアの空港から海外まで行けますし。

I am really indebted to Nagoya, but I don’t think it has a very good reputation in Japan. I don’t know why. I think it’s a nice place. We can go abroad from the Centrair airport.

名物を食べようとすると長い行列になってしまうのは少々閉口します。折角だから、というのは分かるのですが、「ひつまぶし」、「味噌煮込みうどん」などは気軽に食べられません。これは残念ですね。名古屋に限ったことではありませんが、、。

It’s a little frustrating to have to wait in long lines to try the specialties. I understand that it’s a good opportunity, but it’s not easy to eat “Hitsu-mabushi”（Eel dishes） or “Miso-nikomi Udon”（Noodles boiled by Miso soup）. It’s a shame. It’s not limited to Nagoya, though.

さらに話はそれますが、日本に戻ってどうしても食べたいもの、と聞かれるとうなぎと答えます。海外在住の日本人はかなり多くの人が「うなぎ」と答えると思います。お寿司、刺身、天ぷらなど和食の代表的な料理は世界の大都市ではかなり質の高いものが食べられます。うなぎは正直、海外で満足の行くうなぎを食べたことはありません。日本を訪れる海外の方にもうなぎは是非お勧めします。高いですが。

If you ask me what I really want to eat when I get back to Japan, I would say “Eel”. I think a lot of Japanese people living abroad would answer the same. Sushi, sashimi, tempura, and other typical Japanese dishes are available in high quality in major cities around the world. As for eel, to be honest, I have never had satisfactory eel overseas. I highly recommend eel to people from overseas who are visiting Japan. It is expensive, though.

今回も名古屋でうなぎを、と思ったのですがかなり大変そうだったので、実家近くでうなぎを食べました。満足できました。

I wanted to go to Nagoya for eel, but it seemed to be quite difficult, so I ate eel near my parents’ house. I was satisfied.

ライオンキング／Lion King

ブログをしばらく更新できておりませんでした。

I have not been able to update my blog for a while.

「No Music No Life」だと思っていてミュージカルも大好きですが、劇団四季など日本のミュージカルは観劇したことがありませんでした。チケットが取りづらいということもあったかも知れません。日本語での演出に理由も無く抵抗があったのかも知れません。

I believe in “No Music No Life” and I love musicals, but I have never been to a Japanese musical such as the Shiki Theatre Company, partly because it was difficult to get tickets or I felt resistance to the production in Japanese language without any reason.

さて、日本での一時帰国期間を利用して劇団四季名古屋のライオンキングを観劇してきました。こんな時こそ、エンターテインメントに一生懸命取り組む人を応援したい、自分も力をもらいたい、という気持ちだったと思います。

Well, I took advantage of my temporary stay in Japan to see the Lion King at the Shiki Theatre Company Nagoya. I think it was at times like this that I wanted to support people who work hard at entertainment and get strength from them too.

木曜日の午後１時半からの公演だったからでしょうか、かなり良い席を直前に予約することが出来ました。ラッキーでした。劇団四季名古屋は駅から徒歩１０分程度の好立地。平日だったからでしょうか、定年後のご夫婦や女性同士の姿が目立ちました。因みにチケットは11,000円でした。

Perhaps it was because the show was at 1:30 pm on a Thursday, I was able to reserve a pretty good seat at the last minute. It was lucky. The Shiki Theatre Company Nagoya is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from the station. Maybe it was a weekday, so there were a lot of post-retirement couples and women in the audience. By the way, the ticket was 11,000 yen.

感染防止に神経をとがらせなければいけないタイミングですが、特に座席を制限するわけでも無く、ほぼほぼ満員という感じでした。観客同士のお喋りは禁止事項ですが、あの状況で黙っているのは難しいから運営は大変だなと思いました。当然、舞台に向けての歓声を上げることも禁止だったので、コロナ禍前に較べると盛り上がりに欠けたのかも知れません。

We had to be nervous about preventing infection, however there were no restrictions on seating, and the place was almost full. Chatting among the audience was prohibited, but it was difficult to keep quiet in that situation, so I thought it was hard for the management. Of course, cheering at the stage was also prohibited, so it may have been less exciting than before the Covid19 pandemic

ライオンキングのミュージカルについては特にあらすじなど予習することもなく、開演を迎えましたが、冒頭の力強い歌唱で完全に感動しました。後から調べると「Circle of Life」という曲のようです。冒頭の５分くらいで、「ああ、来て良かったな」と思えました。

I didn’t have any prior knowledge about the Lion King musical, but I was completely moved by the powerful singing at the beginning of the show. Later, I found out that the song was called “Circle of Life”. In the first five minutes of the performance, I felt glad that I had come.

子役の一生懸命なパフォーマンスには心打たれるものありますね。セリフを兎に角聞きやすく話すことに努めていることがはっきりと分かりました。ああいう少年、少女が将来の舞台を支えていくんでしょうかね。名古屋弁を混ぜたりの演出も素晴らしかったです。セリフも歌も日本語ですから何を言っているのか分かりやすいのも良いですね。お金と時間があれば、その他一度観たミュージカルも日本語で観てみたいものです。

I was really impressed by the hard work of the child actors in their performances. They were striving to speak their lines in a way that was easy to hear. I wonder if such boys and girls will support the stage culture in the future. The production was also wonderful, with the Nagoya dialect mixed in. It is also good that the lines and songs are in Japanese, so it is easy to understand what they are saying. If I had the money and time, I would like to see the other musicals I have seen in Japanese language.

30人くらいでの舞台ですが、どんな目立たない役でも劇団四季の舞台に立つのは本当に大変なこと。尊敬いたします。だからと言って、長いことやっていれば主役に近づいていくのかは何の保証もないこと、とてつもない才能を持つ方が突然現れて主役を担う状況なのかな、と思います。

There are about 30 of performers on stage. It’s a real challenge to be on the stage of the Shiki Theatre Company, no matter how inconspicuous the role. I respect all of them. There is no guarantee that if he/she does it for a long time they will get closer to the leading role. I think it is a situation where someone with tremendous talent suddenly appears and takes the leading role.

そんなことを思いながらの日本での初ミュージカル。大満足でした。

This was my first musical in Japan with that in mind. Satisfying.

台湾／Taiwan

マニラに住んでいる私にとって、最も身近な海外は台湾と香港だと思います。飛行機で２時間くらいで到着します。コロナ禍で人の往来が絶えてしまったように思いますが、便数も多かったように記憶してます。台湾には２度行きました。最初の訪問は特に休みを取らずに土日で台北に行ったと思います。

Living in Manila, I think the closest foreign countries to me are Taiwan and Hong Kong. It only takes about two hours to get there by plane. I remember that there were many flights, although I think the Covid19 pandemic killed off the human traffic. I have been to Taiwan twice. My record says that my first trip to Taipei was on a Saturday and Sunday without taking a vacation.

記録では2012年7月の土曜日7：20発、日曜日19:30着という約36時間の旅行ということですから、またしても大忙しの旅行です。空港から都心まで安ければタクシーを使おうと思っていましたが、かなり高額だった（5000円以上）ので、タクシーは使わず、バスを使ったように記憶しています。

The records show that the trip took about 36 hours, departing at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday and arriving at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in July 2012, so it was another very busy trip. I would have taken a cab from the airport to the city center if it was cheaper, but it was quite expensive (over 5,000 yen), so I did not take a cab, but a bus.

ホテルで荷物を下ろして行動開始です。ホテルは神旺商務酒店（San Want Residences Taipei）というホテルに泊まりました。非常にサービスも良く快適なホテルでした。また泊まりたいホテルです。お薦め。

I dropped off my luggage at the hotel and started activities. I stayed at a hotel, San Want Residences Taipei. The service was very good and the hotel was very comfortable. I would stay there again. Highly recommended.

小籠包は圧倒的に有名な鼎泰豐でも勿論良かったのですが、そこには行かず、「名月湯包」というお薦めのお店に行きました。違いの分かる私ではございませんが、美味しかったことは間違いないです。凄く高い評価を受けていることも再確認しました。

Of course, I could have gone to Ding Tai Fung, which is by far the most famous for xiao long bao, but instead of going there, we went to a recommended restaurant called “Min yue tan bao”. I am not a person who can tell the difference, but I am sure it was delicious. And I found that this restaurant is very popular, I can see a lot of good reputations.

台湾国立故宮博物院は、普段そうしたものにほとんど興味を示さない私も大いに興味のあった博物館です。人気の「翠玉白菜」や「肉形石（豚の角煮）」のみならず、様々な彫刻や水墨画など、中国の宝物を眺めました。今の職人には作れない、といった説明が随所になされ、そうだろうな、と思いながら鑑賞しました。お土産売り場も大いに魅力でかなり高額出費をした記憶があります。もう一度詳しく勉強してじっくり観覧したいと思います。

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan was a museum that interested me a lot, even though I am not usually interested in such things. Not only did I see the popular “Cui Jade Chinese cabbage” and “meat shaped stone” (pork cubes), but also various sculptures, ink paintings, and other Chinese treasures. There were many explanations about how modern artisans could not make these works, and I thought to myself, “I guess so”. The souvenir shop was also very attractive, and I remember spending quite a bit of money there. I would like to study it in detail again and take a closer look.

その後は、台湾で最も高い101ビルを訪問。2004年のオープン当初は世界一の高さを誇っていたそうです。当時世界一の速さを誇ったエレベーターやウィンドダンパーに日本の技術も活用されており、とても嬉しい気持ちになったことを思い出します。101は少し都心と離れており、周囲には高いビルも無く、高いところからの眺めも楽しみました。ビルの外観も十分に堪能しました。地震リスクのある台湾に500ｍを超えるビルを建てているんだからすごいことです。

After that, I visited the Taipei 101 Building, the tallest building in Taiwan, which used to be the tallest building in the world when it opened in 2004. The building is a bit far from the city center and there are no tall buildings around it, so I enjoyed the view from high up. I thoroughly enjoyed the appearance of the building. It’s amazing that they are building a building over 500 meters high in Taiwan, where there is a risk of earthquakes.

夕食も中華を食べました。土曜日の夜ということもあり、本来であれば夜市にでかけ、B級グルメを堪能するはずでしたが、ホテルでまったりしてしまい台北の夜をあまり満喫しなかったと記憶しています。もうその頃から食べる量が減っていたということでしょうか。

I also had Chinese food for dinner. Since it was a Saturday night, I was supposed to go to the night market and enjoy B-grade gourmet food, but I remember that I stayed in the hotel and didn’t enjoy the Taipei night very much. I guess I was full already.

翌日は熱心な仏教徒が参拝している寺院や台湾の代表的な建物などを巡り、無事に帰路についた、そんな感じだったように思います。一人であれこれと回りましたが、見どころがコンパクトにまとまっていたこともあり、台北の中心地は満喫できました。

The next day, I visited temples where enthusiastic Buddhists worshipped, typical Taiwanese buildings, and returned home safely. I was able to fully enjoy the central area of Taipei due to the compactness of the sights.

人気の九ふんなどに足を伸ばすには日程が足りなかったように思います。マニラからのアクセスは最高ですし、料理も美味く、何度でも訪問したい都市だと思います。台中や高雄といった都市も素晴らしいと聞きます。台湾はその後も一度行きましたが、何度でも行きたいところです。

I don’t think I had enough time to visit popular places like Jiufen. The access from Manila is excellent, the food is delicious, and it is a city I would like to visit again and again. I heard that Taichung and Kaohsiung are also great cities. I visited Taiwan again in 2018, and I would love to visit there again and again.

ドローン／Drone　（１）

2018年の8月にドローンを買ってあれこれと撮影しましたが、最近はどこにも行けておらず、ドローンの活躍機会が減っています。すでにブログに使った写真もありますが、私のドローン撮影で記憶に残っている写真を何枚かシェアさせて頂きます。

I bought a drone in August 2018 and photographed this and that, but lately I haven’t been able to go anywhere and my drone has been less active. I already used some of the photos for my blog, but I will share some of my memorable drone shots.

因みに私が使っているドローンは、DJI Sparkという機種ですが、こんな感じです。日本では届け出が必要な重量ですが、フィリピンではそうした必要はありません。

The drone I’m using is a DJI Spark, and it looks like this. In Japan, you need to report/register for usage, but in the Philippines, I don’t need to do so.

これは、カランガマン島の風景です。私のドローン撮影の中でも印象に残っている一枚です。Googleの”スタイルを適用した写真”というものです。なんかインチキのように思えますが、見た目はやはり良いですよね。

This is a landscape of Kalanggaman Island. It’s one of my most memorable drone shots, and it’s a Google “photo with style applied”. It seems kind of bogus, but it still looks good, doesn’t it?

私が愛してやまないカンルーバンゴルフ場の写真も大好きです。この南国らしいゴルフ場はドローン撮影に適していると思います。

I also love to photograph the Canlubang Golf Course, which I love. I think this tropical golf course is ideal for drone photography.

シャルガオ島からアイランドホッピングすると必ず訪問するGuyam島はドローンで上から撮影するとその素晴らしさが際立ちますね。

Guyam Island is always a must-visit when island-hopping from Siargao Island, and its splendor stands out when photographed from above with a drone.

これは、マラパスクア島、バンカーボートが沢山停留していて、賑わいを象徴しているようで素晴らしいです。これもGoogleのスタイルを適用した写真です。色合いが強調されていますよね。

This is Malapascua Island, and it’s great to see so many bunker boats moored there, symbolizing the bustle of the place. This is another photo that I applied Google style. The colors are emphasized, aren’t they?

マニラから車で２時間程度で到着するアニラオには沢山のダイブショップがあります。一度紹介した、Villa MagdalenaとLa Chevrerieの風景もドローン撮影に適してますでしょ？

There are many dive shops in Anilao, just a two-hour drive from Manila. The scenery of Anilao Villa Magdalena and La Chevrerie, which I introduced once, is also suitable for drone photography, right?

早くドローンが活躍する日々が戻ってきて欲しいです。私のドローンは良く働いてくれていますが、風が強いと安定しません。風速５M程度までの無風、微風の環境が必要です。また、１０分もすれば、バッテリーが切れてしまいます。ドローン撮影にもっともっとこだわるのであれば、風に強く、一回の飛行でもっともっと長く使える高級機種に買い替えたいという希望があります。

I hope the days when my drones is active will come back soon. My drone is working well, but it is not stable in strong wind. It needs an environment with no wind or light wind up to about 5 mph. Also, the battery will run out of power in 10 minutes. If I want to be more particular about my drone photography, I would like to replace it with a high-end model that is more resistant to wind and can last much longer in a single flight.

バルセロナ／Barcelona

さて、前回1992年のバルセロナ・オリンピックについてブログに書きました。本日は2015年10月のバルセロナ旅行について書きます。街中に素敵な建物が溢れていて、魅力的な観光地です。あまりにも観光客が多くて、そこに住む人にとっては問題だ、という記事を読んだことがあります。日本の京都もそんな感じだと思います。コロナ禍が収束し、旅行が解禁ともなれば、世界中の観光都市は旅行を我慢していた人で溢れかえることになるでしょうね。

Last time I blogged about the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Today, I will write about my trip to Barcelona in October 2015. The city is full of nice buildings and is a fascinating tourist destination. I once read an article that said that too many tourists are a problem for the people living there. I think Kyoto in Japan is like that. When the Covid19 pandemic is over and the travel ban is lifted, tourist cities around the world will be flooded with people who have been holding back from traveling.

バルセロナに着いたのは、10/29の11：20の飛行機。10/31の9：45にフランクフルトへ向かって旅立ちました。滞在時間２日でバルセロナを楽しもうという欲張り日程でした。旅行日記が残っておらず、メールを検索してフライト情報を引っ張り出しています。ホテルはAMREY SANT PAUというところ。当時、２泊で17,000円ということですから、決して高級ホテルでは無いように思います。確認したら現在も営業中です。サグラダファミリアまで1.2キロと、歩いてサグラダファミリアまで観光出来るのですから、便利なロケーションです。名前でも分かる通り、世界遺産の一つサン・パウ病院からも近いです。バルセロナはホテルが本当に多いですね。

I arrived in Barcelona at 11:20 a.m. on October 29, and left for Frankfurt at 9:45 a.m. on October 31. It was a greedy schedule to enjoy Barcelona in two days. I don’t have a travel diary, so I’m searching my email and pulling up the flight information. The hotel was the AMREY SANT PAU, which cost 17,000 yen for two nights at the time, so I don’t think it was a luxury hotel. I checked and it is still in business. The hotel is only 1.2 kilometers away from the Sagrada Familia, so it is a convenient location for sightseeing since you can walk to the Sagrada Familia. As the name suggests, it is also close to the Hospital Sant Pau, one of the World Heritage Sites. There are so many hotels in Barcelona.

さて、初日は、FCバルセロナの本拠地Camp Nouに行ったり、バルセロナの中心地ランブラス通りやらカサ・ミラや、ゴシック地区、ブケリア市場、サンタ・エウラリア大聖堂を写真に撮ったりして、見どころを沢山巡り、有意義な一日を過ごしました。

On the first day, we went to Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona, and visited and took pictures of the Ramblas, Casa Mila, the Gothic Quarter, the Buquería Market, and the Cathedral of Barcelona.

一人旅は気ままで良いのですが、食事がどうしても貧相になってしまいますね。折角のスペイン、バルセロナでしたが、何を食べたか覚えていないですし、写真もありません。多分、ホテル近くのレストランで軽く済ませたんだと思います。

Traveling alone is fine, but the lunch/Dinner are inevitably poor. I had a great time in Barcelona, Spain, but I don’t remember what I ate, and I don’t have any photos. I think I probably had a quick meal at a restaurant near the hotel.

次の朝は、ハイライトとも言えるサグラダファミリアへ。未完の外観も素晴らしいの一言ですが、内部も素晴らしいですね。光の入り方が何となくスペインっぽいような気がしました（全く根拠ありませんが）。世界中から多くの方が集まっていたことが印象に残っています。

The next morning I went to the highlight of Barcelona sightseeing, the Sagrada Familia. The unfinished exterior is amazing, and the interior is also wonderful. I felt that the way the light was coming in was somehow Spanish (although I have no proof at all). I was impressed by the many people from all over the world who had gathered there.

サグラダファミリアを満喫した後は、グエル公園へ。交通の便があまり良く無かったためか、沢山歩いたように思います。入場待ちの長い列があり、中には入らず。

After fully enjoying the Sagrada Familia, we went to Park Güell. I think we walked a lot because the traffic was not so convenient. There was a long line waiting to get in, so we didn’t go in.

その後は丘の上からバルセロナを見渡せるカタルーニャ美術館にも足を伸ばしました。あまり絵画や彫刻といった美術には興味のない私は最近よほどのことが無いと美術館の中には入りません。今回も自信を持って見送りました。バルセロナの街を一望に出来る景色の方が僕には嬉しく、その辺はぶれていません。

After that, I went to the Museo de Catalunya, which overlooks Barcelona from the top of a hill. I’m not really interested in art, such as paintings and sculptures, so I don’t go into museums unless I have a good special reason. This time, too, I was confident enough to forgo it. I’m more than happy with the view of the city of Barcelona.

仮装のイベントが開催されていたようでその中に日本のキャラクターを見つけると嬉しくなるものですね。

There was a masquerade event going on, and it made me happy to find Japanese characters in it.

まだ時間があったので電車に乗ってトーレ・アグバールという近代的な建物を眺めたりしてました。トラムに乗ったりして目的地に正しく到着出来ることは嬉しいことです。難易度の高いバスを乗りこなせるともっと素晴らしいです。

There was still some time left, so I took the train and looked at the modern building called Torre Agbar. It’s nice to be able to take the streetcar and arrive at my destination correctly. It’s even better when I can get on a bus properly, which can be challenging.

バルセロナは当然、素晴らしい建物が多いのですが、入場料が高額でした。当然、その価値はあるのでしょうが、毎度毎度払うのはバカバカしいので、外観だけ楽しむもの、中まで入るもの、を決めておくべきでした。カタルーニャ音楽堂もは入場料が高かったので、フラメンコを観て建物の内部も見学する作戦を取りました。これはお薦めです。

Needless to say, Barcelona has a lot of great buildings, I think the entrance fees were all expensive. I think, it is worth it, but it is ridiculous to pay it every time, so we should have decided which ones we would enjoy just for the exterior and which ones we would go inside. The Palace of Catalan Music was also very expensive, so I decided to watch the flamenco and visit the inside of the building. This is highly recommended.

フラメンコは勿論テレビで観たりする機会ありましたが、Liveではあまりの迫力に気圧されました。息が詰まるほどの切迫感で愉快とは無縁のものでした。正直な感想は、「何が彼ら、彼女らを突き動かしているんだろう？　あなた方の凄さはもう分かりました」といった感じです。バルセロナがフラメンコの本場ではないようですが、私には十分すぎるパフォーマンスでした。本当のフラメンコを鑑賞できたことは素晴らしい経験でした。

Of course, I have had the opportunity to watch flamenco on TV, but I was overwhelmed by the power of the live performance. It was a breathless sense of impatience that was anything but pleasant. Barcelona may not be the home of flamenco, but the performance was more than enough for me. It was a wonderful experience to see real flamenco.

こうして、私が得意としている「兎に角行くべきところには行く」という慌ただしいバルセロナ２日間の旅が終わりました。次回はアルハンブラ宮殿等スペインの南部にも足を伸ばしたいな、と思っています。

Thus ended my hectic two-day trip to Barcelona, where I did what I do best, “go wherever I have to go”. Next time, I would like to visit the Alhambra Palace and other places in the south of Spain.

バルセロナ・オリンピック／Barcelona Olympics

ひねくれものの私が1992年の卒業旅行で、敢えてバルセロナに行かなかったことは何度も述べています。1992年はバルセロナ・オリンピックが開催されることが決まっていましたし、サグラダファミリアを始めとする建造物も大いに魅力で、卒業旅行でかなり多くの日本人が1992年の卒業旅行においてバルセロナを訪問したと思います。

I’ve mentioned many times that I was cynical and didn’t go to Barcelona on my graduation trip in 1992, because the Barcelona Olympics were scheduled to be held in 1992, and the Sagrada Familia and other buildings were very attractive. I believe that quite a lot Japanese visited Barcelona on their graduation trips in 1992.

さて、今から約30年前のバルセロナ・オリンピックってどんな大会だっただろう、と思い出そうと試みましたが、明確な記憶がありませんでした。当然その当時もオリンピックで盛り上がっていたはずです。パラリンピックも開催されていますが、当時それほど注目されていなかったと思います。

I tried to remember what the Barcelona Olympics were about 30 years ago, but I had no clear memory of it. Of course, the Olympics must have been a lot of fun back then. The Paralympics were also being held, but I don’t think they were the focus of much attention at the time.

オリンピックは言うまでも無く、自国選手の活躍が最優先されると思います。皆さん、自国選手がどう活躍したか覚えていますか？３０年も前の話だと記憶もあいまいですよね。

I think it goes that the top priority of the Olympics is the performance of the athletes of your country, needless to say. Do you remember how your country’s athletes performed?

日本は、合計３個の金メダルを獲得しました。水泳・平泳ぎの岩崎恭子さんの金メダル、「今まで生きてたなかで一番幸せ」のインタビュー、バルセロナ・オリンピックだったんですね。随分前の話です。柔道の吉田秀彦選手、古賀稔彦選手の金メダルをYoutubeで改めて視聴しました。感動しましたね。柔道はお家芸ですが、バルセロナでの金は２つだったんですね。

Japan won a total of three gold medals. Kyoko Iwasaki’s gold medal in swimming breaststroke, her interview with “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life”, it was the Barcelona Olympics. That was a long time ago. I watched the gold medals of judo Hidehiko Yoshida and Toshihiko Koga again on Youtube. Very impressive. Judo is a signature sport of Japan, but there were only two golds in Barcelona.

女子柔道が正式種目に採用されたのがバルセロナ・オリンピックからだったと今知りました。柔ちゃんが高校生で出場し、銀メダルを獲得してますね。正直記憶に無いです。有森裕子さんの銀メダルが記録にありますが、「初めて自分で自分を褒めてあげたい」は次の1996年のアトランタなんですね。そちらをより印象深く覚えています。

I just found out that women’s judo was adopted as an official sport first at the Barcelona Olympics. Ms. Tamura participated in Olympic at high school student age and won a silver medal. To be honest, I don’t remember it. Yuko Arimori’s silver medal in women’s marathon is on record, but her “I want to give myself a pat on the back for the first time” came in Atlanta in 1996. I remember that one more vividly.

男子バスケットボールに全米の「ドリームチーム」が初出場し、圧倒的な強さを見せつけたのはバルセロナオリンピックだったと。また、長らくアパルトヘイトを理由にオリンピックに出場していなかった南アフリカが32年ぶりに参加したのもこの大会だったと。

It was at the Barcelona Olympics that the U.S. “Dream Team” participated in men’s basketball for the first time and showed its overwhelming strength. It was also the first time in 32 years that South Africa, which had long been excluded from the Olympics due to apartheid, participated in the games.

人よりもオリンピックには熱中する方で、記憶力も自負しておりますが、流石に記憶が曖昧ですね。こうしてブログを書くことによって過去を調べ直すことは大切なことだと思った次第です。

I’m more enthusiastic about the Olympics than most people, and I think my memory is good. However, I found that my memory is fuzzy. I thought it was important to reexamine the past by writing a blog like this.

あれほど毎日熱中した東京オリンピック・パラリンピックから２，３か月が経過しました。記憶がどんどん薄れていることに自分でも驚いています。

A few months have passed since the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which I was so passionate about every day. I’m surprised at how fast my memory is fading.

パリ／Paris

パリには1992年の卒業旅行でTGVに乗るために立ち寄ったことはありますが、観光しませんでした。JALのマイレージが貯まっていたこと、バルセロナ、リスボンに行きたかったこと、から、2015年10月に９日間で東京-パリ-リスボン-バルセロナ-フランクフルト-東京の「欲張り駆け足旅行」を挙行しました。

I had stopped by Paris to take the TGV on my graduation trip in 1992, but no sightseeing there. Since I had accumulated JAL frequent flyer miles and wanted to visit Barcelona and Lisbon, I decided to take a “short greedy trip” of Tokyo-Paris-Lisbon-Barcelona-Frankfurt-Tokyo in 9 days in October 2015.

パリには旅行初日の夜遅くに到着、翌日は早朝暗いうちにチェックアウト。空港近くに荷物を預け、昼過ぎまでパリ観光をし、荷物を取りに行き、空港へ。という約半日の非常に慌ただしいパリ訪問となりました。間違いがあってはいけないので、到着したときに荷物を預ける場所、電車の乗り場など入念にチェックしました。15：05のフライトだったという記録がありますので、13時には空港についていなくてはいけなかった、ということです。

I arrived in Paris late at night on the first day of trip. The next day, I checked out early in the morning in the dark, left my luggage near the airport, went sightseeing in Paris until early afternoon, picked up my luggage, and went to the airport. It turned out to be a very hectic visit to Paris for about half a day. The flight was scheduled for 15:05, so I had to be at the airport by 13:00.

寝るだけの空港近くのホテルに宿泊しました。翌朝は電車でパリの中心地へ。路線図を見ながら地下鉄に乗り換え、ルーブル美術館の最寄り駅で地下鉄を降りた記憶があります。地上に上がった瞬間、パリの中心地の光景が飛び込んできました。建物の規模が大きく、お洒落で、「パリに来たな」という感慨を覚えています。ルーブルの展示物を見る時間などありませんから、写真だけ撮って、街をぶらぶらしながら、見どころを巡りました。オペラ座のビルやその周辺のカフェだったり、流石に格調高いですよね。お、この建物素晴らしい建物だな、、と写真を撮っても、それが何なのか分からない、そんな感じの街歩きでした。地図を見ながらなんとかシャンゼリゼへ。シャンゼリゼ通りは歩いているだけで非常に心ときめいたことを覚えています。

I stayed at a hotel near the airport just to sleep. I took the train to the center of Paris. I remember looking at the route map and transferring to the subway, and getting off the subway at the station closest to the Louvre. The moment I stepped on the ground, the sight of the center of Paris jumped out at me. The building was large and stylish, and I remember feeling deeply that I had arrived in Paris. There was no time to look at the exhibits in the Louvre, so I just took pictures and wandered around the city, visiting the highlights. The Opera building and the surrounding cafes are very prestigious. I took a picture of this wonderful building, but I didn’t know what it was, and that’s how I walked around the city. Looking at the map, I managed to get to the Champs Elysees. I remember that just walking along the Champs-Elysees was very exciting.

凱旋門でパシャパシャ写真を撮り、エッフェル塔へ。ノートルダム寺院へも行かねば、と消失前の寺院をカメラに収めることが出来たことは収穫でした。

I took pictures at the Arc de Triomphe and went to the Eiffel Tower. I also visited Notre Dame, and it was a great opportunity to take pictures of Notre Dame before its fire.

どこだったか分かりませんが、電車の駅と地下鉄の駅が地図では連結しているように見えますが、歩くとたっぷり１０分以上あることになったり、バスに乗ったら、思い通りの場所に到着できた喜びだったり、時間が無いだけに移動手段を使いこなせたことは大いなる喜びでした。公共交通乗り放題のようなチケットを使いこなせなければ移動は難しかったと思います。損得関係なく、旅行者には切符を買う、料金を払う、ということが難しいのでこういう乗り放題チケットは必須だと思います。

I don’t know where it was, but it looked like the train station and subway station were connected on the map, but I found that it took more than 10 minutes. I think it would have been difficult to get around if I hadn’t been able to use the unlimited public transportation tickets. Regardless of profit or loss, it is difficult for a traveler to buy a ticket or pay a fee for each travel, so I think these unlimited tickets are essential.

天気はどんよりしていましたが、「高いところは最高だ」という法則（？）に則り、最後はモンマルトルの丘に向かいました。少しだけまったりして、写真撮って、空港へ向かいました。全く表面的で外観の写真を撮っただけの半日旅行でした。食事も無しでした。

The weather was dreary, but in accordance with my policy that “the highest is the best,” so I headed for the Montmartre hill at the end. I relaxed for a bit, took some pictures, and then headed for the airport. It was only half-day trip, and I only took pictures of the exterior. There was no lunch.

パリに魅せられる人が多いこと理解しています。何度も何度もパリに旅行している方、パリに大いに憧れている方からすると、あまりにもパリへの敬意が欠けているような表面的な旅行でしたが、私としては、印象深い半日の駆け足旅行の記録でした。

I understand that many people are fascinated by Paris. For those who have traveled to Paris many times and for those who have a great admiration for Paris, My travel seemed to lack too much respect for the city, but for me, it was a memorable half-day trip.

トルコ・リラ／Turkish Lira

人々が違った言葉を使っているように、国によって通貨が違います。異なる通貨は厄介なことに交換レート（為替レート）が刻一刻と変化します。

Just as people living in different countries use different languages, different countries have different currencies. The trouble with different currencies is that the exchange rate (foreign exchange rate) can change from moment to moment.

上記は題名の通りで、１トルコリラの円貨額の10年推移を表しています。2012年から2014年くらいはある程度安定していましたが、この7年間くらいほぼ一貫して下がり続けていることがグラフから明らかです。「円高・トルコリラ安」という状況です。

As the title suggests, the above graph shows the 10-year trend of the yen value of one Turkish lira. This was somewhat stable from 2012 to 2014, but has been declining almost consistently for the past seven years. This is a “strong yen, weak Turkish lira” situation.

トルコの金利は非常に高く、現在の１週間物の政策金利は16％です。一時期は24％もの金利を付していたこともあるようです。インフレーションの原因は様々で、経済成長による物価の先高観、通貨安による輸入品価格の上昇、原油など資源価格高が物価高を引き起こすこともあります。

Interest rates in Turkey are very high, with the current one-week policy rate at 16%. At one time, the interest rate was as high as 24%. Inflation can be caused by a variety of factors, including the anticipation of higher prices due to economic growth, higher prices of imported goods due to a weaker currency, and higher prices of resources such as crude oil.

トルコでは、高いインフレーション（物価上昇）を抑えるために、高金利を付さざるを得ない事情にあります。金融引き締めという政策を取り、通貨価値を守る必要がある状況です。これに対し、エルドアン大統領は景気を刺激するために政策金利を下げたい意向があるようです。これを行うとインフレーションが進んでしまい、トルコ・リラはまた下落するんでしょう。

Turkey is forced to charge high interest rates in order to control high inflation (rising prices). It is necessary to protect the value of the currency by adopting a policy of monetary tightening. In contrast, President Erdogan seems to want to lower the policy rate in order to stimulate the economy. If he does this, inflation will increase, and the Turkish lira will probably fall again. Reflecting some of these concerns, there is downward pressure on the Turkish lira.

日本のようにデフレーションが何年も続き、ゼロ金利（マイナス金利）を継続しても物価が一向に上がっていかない国からすると何とも不思議です。トルコのようにインフレを抑制しなくてはいけないのも大変ですが、デフレーションも大問題です。トルコを旅行したときにガイドブックに記載の入場料や運賃などが実際に行ってみたら上がっていた、ということを経験しましたが、そのころからトルコではインフレーションに見舞われていたということでしょうか。

For a country like Japan, where deflation has continued for years even with zero interest rates (negative interest rates), it is quite a wonder. It is tough to have to control inflation like in Turkey, but deflation is also a big problem. When I traveled to Turkey, I experienced that the entrance fees and fares mentioned in the guidebooks had gone up when I actually got there.

世界的にはインフレーション（物価上昇率）を目標（2，3％程度）に金融政策を実施している国もありますね。私の住むフィリピンでは2-4％を理想的な物価上昇率と設定し、金融政策を行っています。日本では２％の物価上昇になるまで異次元の金融緩和を行っています。もう８年くらいになるのですが、金融緩和が株価や不動産価格の上昇を巻き起こしているとは思うのですが、全体の物価上昇にはなっていかないですね。そのメカニズム等難しいことは分かりませんが、政府や日銀の狙いと世の中の流れが噛み合っていないように思います。

I know that some countries around the world have monetary policy with inflation as a target (around 2 or 3 percent). The Philippines, where I live, has set 2-4% as the target inflation rate and is conducting monetary policy. In Japan, super monetary easing policy has been carried out until the inflation rate reaches 2 percent. It has been about eight years now, and I think that monetary easing has caused stock prices and real estate prices to rise, but it has not led to an rise in consumer prices. I don’t know the mechanism. I don’t think that the government’s and the Bank of Japan’s goals are as planned.

トルコ・リラや南アフリカ・ランドは高金利通貨で、FXと呼ばれる為替の方向や円との金利差による収益を狙う取引でも注目通貨だと思います。リスクの大きい取引ですからそういうことで収益を狙う人は良く良く勉強して取り組むことをお薦めします。

The Turkish Lira and the South African Rand are high interest rate currencies. And they seem to be noteworthy currencies in the “FX Trade”, which aims to profit from foreign exchange rate and the difference in interest rates with the yen. It is a risky trade, so those who aim to make a profit from such a trade should study enough.

ジョリビー／Jollibee

ジョリビーはフィリピンで最も有名なファーストフードです。マクドナルドがフィリピンではファーストフードとして一位が取れないということでも有名だと思います。トニー・タン・カクションという華僑がスタートしたチェーン店です。

Jollibee is the most famous fast food in the Philippines. I think it is also famous for the fact that McDonald’s can’t take the top spot as a fast food in the Philippines. An overseas Chinese named Tony Tan Caktiong started this chain restaurant.

ゴルフでバーディーを取ると、キャディーさんには100ペソ（200円強）をチップに上乗せすることが一般的になっています。これでキャディーさんはジョリビーに行くんだそうです。だからバーディーのことをジョリビーと呼ぶこともあります。全く脱線しますが、バンカーのことをボラカイ（フィリピン屈指のビーチリゾート）と呼ぶこともあります。

When you make a birdie in golf, it is common practice to add 100 pesos (just over 200 yen) to the tip for the caddy. With this, the caddy goes to Jollibee. That’s why birdies are sometimes referred to as jollibees. Totally off topic, but sometimes the bunker is called Boracay (one of the best beach resorts in the Philippines).

ハンバーガーも売っていますが、ハンバーガーショップというよりは、チキンセットミールが主力だと思います。チキンとごはんのセットが主力ですが、チキンとスパゲッティというセットミールもあります。スープを付けたり、デザートを付けたり、と様々なバリエーションがあります。僕もたまに行きますが、コーヒーを売っていないので（売っている店舗があるのかも知れませんが）、ホットコーヒーも販売して欲しいと思います。

They also sell hamburgers, but I think their main products are chicken set meals rather than a hamburger store. Chicken and rice is the main set meal, but there is also a chicken and spaghetti set meal. There are many variations, such as adding soup or dessert. I also go there sometimes, but they don’t sell coffee (maybe some stores do), so I wish they would sell hot coffee.

海外進出に関しては、世界中で活躍するフィリピン人をまずはターゲットにしてるそうです。日本への海外進出は随分前から言われていましたが、今のところ実現していないようで残念です。ニューヨークでJolliebeeを見つけた時は思わず嬉しくて写真を撮ってしまいました。

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf は鳴り物入りで日本進出したのを覚えていますが、今は風前の灯のようですね。現在、このアメリカのロスを本拠とするチェーンはJollibeeの傘下に入っているようです。フィリピンでもたまに行きますし、シンガポールでもお世話になっていました。

I remember when The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf made a splash in Japan, but now it seems to be winding down. The L.A.-based chain now is under the umbrella of Jollibee. I go there occasionally in the Philippines, and was also a customer in Singapore.

コロナ禍収束により、各ジョリビー店舗がお客さんの笑顔で一杯になること祈念しています。
